3D Modelling

  • Overview of the various software packages available and what can be achieved using a modern 3D modelling package.
  • Students will be able to create their own 3D computer models, render and animate them.

Computerised Analysis

  • A look into how 3D computer models can be used to analyse stress, motion, heat transfer, aerodynamics and fluid low.
  • Students will simulate a product under stress and predict its performance.

Rapid Prototyping & Reverse Engineering

  • Overview of the current technology available and the typical applications of rapid prototyping and reverse engineering.
  • Students will see rapid prototyping in action, understand its applications and design products to be made to using this advance technology.
  • Students will see 3D scanning in action and understand how tangible objects can be digitised to produce computer models.

Rapid Prototyping Bureau

A rapid prototyping bureau is also available for local schools, enabling them rapid prototype exempla work. Staff CPD

Staff will be trained to use 3D modelling software and introduced to the different technologies used in industry, giving a greater understanding for teaching.

CADventure

3D CADventure is a firm favourite; a flexible half or full day Solidworks training session run by designers from our team. The sessions take place in school or at our computer suite at the PDC.

The session aims to give an introduction to the software. It is a chance to learn SolidWorks, for those who have not used the package or CAD before. Pupils will work through this hands-on, tutorial based course at your own pace with guidance from trained design engineers.

Topics include:
  • Introduction to the SolidWorks software and its interface
  • Sketching and using sketch planes
  • Basic part modelling using extrudes and cuts
  • Editing sketches and features
  • Revolving rotationally symmetrical parts
  • Assembling multiple parts
  • Creating 2D drawings from parts and assemblies
  • Sweeping a profile along a path to create parts
Half or full day activity. Available in school or at the PDC.

These sessions can be tailored to a specific project undertaken by a class or used as a general lesson on stress analysis.

Using 3D CAD models and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to simulate a product under stress and predict its performance. Designs can be changed and simulations re-run to refine the design and improve the performance. These tests help reduce the development times of products and are verified using physical testing.

Only available with CADventure, as part of a half or full day activity.

Product Stress Analysis Using COSMOSWorks for SolidWorks

These sessions can be tailored to a specific project undertaken by a class or used as a general lesson on stress analysis.

Rapid Prototyping (RP) is a process of manufacturing products directly from a 3D CAD representation. RP machines can build almost any object from simple shapes to complex geometries which are difficult to manufacture in other ways.

A chance to learn about Rapid Prototyping (RP) and its applications. We will take a look at the most commonly used RP methods, their applications and the materials used.

Topics include:
  • Introduction to Rapid Prototyping (RP)
  • RP and RM techniques/methods and applications
  • Design project
  • File formatting and saving for RP
This workshop can be used as an introduction to a design project, set by the PDC and run in school, and the best design(s) made on the FDM machine.

3D Scanning is the process of digitising tangible objects for the use of reverse engineering or replication. 3D scanning can be used in numerous industries including car production, sculpture, and simple CAD check of castings.

A chance to learn about 3D scanning and reverse engineering. We will take a look at how 3D scanning can be used for various applications including archiving, replication and reverse engineering. Topics include:
  • Introduction to 3D Scanning
  • Typical applications of 3D Scanning
  • Practical scanning application
