The Event: On Tuesday 11th June, level 3 Travel and Tourism students held a mini travel market promoting seven different countries.

What was the aim: To enable the learners to experience the adrenaline of the travel market and develop their skills in organising an event as part of their qualification. They had all funded their own stalls and costumes, blasting the venue with colourful decorations and music to create a carnival atmosphere.

Student View: ‘As a group we all feel that the event was a great success, reaching a new visitor record. We all received positive feedback and enjoyed the experience’.

Quote from Course Tutor, Kim Scott: ‘I am extremely proud of the professionalism and dedication these level 3 learners have projected today. What a great way to end the academic year, it has been a pleasure to teach them all. Congratulations and good luck in your future careers’.

What happened? In April, level three Makeup Artistry students teamed up with local film crews and in-house professional photographers studying HND Photography.

The aim: This collaboration provided make-up artistry students with hands-on experience of working with a photographer. Course Leader, Mia Goddard, said ‘The Makeup Artistry course we deliver here at Sussex Coast College Hastings is aimed at preparing our students for working within this industry.’

The day was a real success with great pictures being produced and the students’ confidence soaring. All the students obtained professional images for their portfolios.

Student's view: ‘I have to say that I really enjoyed the lesson when we worked as a team with makeup artists, models and photographers. This was exactly what I expected from the course, we had such a great day!’ (Inga, student)

What happened? Level 3 Travel and Tourism students impressed airport staff on a recent visit to Gatwick Airport.

Aim of the visit: Look at different job roles available at Gatwick, speak to staff in different roles, see how Customer Service deals with complaints, find out how a check-in desk operates and what happens behind the check-in desk, look at air traffic control, custom control and Bureaux de Change.

Quote from Terminal Team Leader, Darren Wood: 'It was a real pleasure to be able to show your students around and it was further commented on when I returned to the office how impressed the airport community was with the point that I've even had to reassure some staff that no, we aren't bringing in a new handling agent!'

Tom Penney

I am: Tom Penney, student studying Foundation Diploma in Art & Design

What am I doing? I have been granted a two-week scholarship on the summer ‘Drawing Marathon’ at the New York Studio School. I was offered this by Fran O’Neill, a tutor at the New York Studio School, who recently had an exhibition of her work at the college and spent time working with the art and design foundation group.

What does this opportunity mean? This is a fantastic opportunity and I am honoured to have been given the chance to have the experience of a life-time.

Will you tell us how it went? When I get back, I'll give you an update!

Course Tutor: Jeb Haward said," This is has been an invaluable experience for Tom and we are very grateful to Fran for her support in offering our students this opportunity. This helps them attain real-life experience with real professionals and are very happy to be able to offer this opportunity to a lucky student next year.
