Keith Hau, 28, is studying FdA Illustration at Sussex Coast College Hastings and is in his final year. He will be going on to study BA (hons) Illustration in Cambridge in September.

Keith moved from London to Hastings to study his FdA, leaving the hustle and bustle of London life behind, needing a change from the fast-paced lifestyle to focus on himself and his studies.

Keith talks about his experience studying at Sussex Coast College and living in Hastings.

‘At first I was anxious about moving to Hastings. I didn’t know anyone and was used to the London lifestyle but after two years of being here, it feels like home. I feel more adjusted to being here than I did in London.

I didn’t know much about Hastings before coming here but the space, atmosphere and lifestyle has influenced my illustration work. There are lots of bookshops and inspirations in the town.

Before I came to SCCH, I was more of a Graphic Designer, but was passionate about illustration. I feared to jump in and do it, but I couldn’t have made a better decision.

I am learning a lot to progress my skills. I create the accidents and never know how things are going to come out, but it pushes ideas forward. I prefer the tactile hands on approach – where things are never perfect.

The tutor contact time we receive is invaluable. The tutors give everything to support and feedback on the work. We even have the opportunity to try things across the Art and Design department, including pottery, textiles and ceramics.

These are things which I would never have tried at a bigger University campus, as the tutors give so much time to support us in all areas. We have easy access to all of the equipment we need.’

Keith recently entered a competition run by the Victoria and Albert Museum and was shortlisted to the top 5, out of over 320 entries. He will be attending an awards ceremony later this year at the V&A in London, which is a great experience for Keith.

‘The River’ (pictured with Keith) is based around folktales and gave him the opportunity to explore storytelling, which is where he sees his future, hoping to one day illustrating a children’s picture book.
