17 Level 3 Engineering students from Sussex Coast College Hastings were invited on to Hastings Pier this week to experience welding on site, as part of the welding module of their Diploma.
The college has two Engineering Apprentices working on the pier and it was suggested the rest of the class could benefit from a trip to the site before the work is completed next year.
The students were able to have a go at arc welding on the site as well as walking underneath and along the pier to see the structural work taking place.
They saw how challenging welding can be whilst in a harness and battling the elements on a typical ‘British’ day.
Andy Holmes and Daniel Bailey are two Apprentices working on the pier, which is an excellent opportunity for any young person starting a career in Engineering.
Tutor Keith Bull added ‘The diploma Engineering learners were invited to Hastings pier as development towards their welding unit, which is covered in their study programme. The visit was very interesting and we looked at the structural redevelopment above and below the pier, some of the learners also had a go at arc welding on some of the supporting trusts.’
The college want to thank Peter Wheeler and his team for the site visit.
