What entry requirements do I need?
You will need a minimum of: To apply for this course you will need to meet the minimum requirements and have a Grade 6 in GCSE English Language.
What will I learn?
During this two-year course you will explore the English language, developing your creativity and analytical skills.
Over the two-years of this course you will begin to realise that language is one of the most powerful things that you have at your disposal. You will understand the purpose of writing, discover more about spoken language and explore the impact that new technology has on modern day language. You will also be able to develop your writing style, while analysing areas such as the media to see how the key constituents of the English Language contribute to meaning.
Through textual analysis and your own creative responses, you will consider:
- The purposes of writing
- How to create texts for specific audiences
- Contextual factors
- Stylistic features
- Explore the spoken language
- Explore the impact of new technology
- Study how children learn to speak
- Consider how gender and culture influence our verbal interaction
- Consider how the English language is constantly in flux with words and phrases slipping in and out of usage all the time
You will be assessed through regular feedback during the course, and be required to complete two written papers worth 80% of your overall mark, and complete an Independent language research project worth 20%.
What could I progress on to?
On completion of this course you can progress onto degree level study in creative writing, journalism, or English.
There are a number of career opportunities available for you to follow such as going into Publishing, becoming a Journalist, a Speech and language therapist, an English teacher or a Copywriter.
There may be some additional costs during the course for trips and visits to further your learning. All students are required to provide themselves with a dedicated folder for this subject.
