AS/A Level English Literature

What entry requirements do I need?

You will need a minimum of: To apply for this course you will need to meet the minimum requirements and have a Grade 6 in GCSE English Literature.

What will I learn?

During this two-year course you will develop a sharp, analytical mind, and become a critical reader to prepare you for future studies.

Over the course of this subject you will use you love for reading to exploring texts in depth with like-minded people to share ideas and interpretations. You will study a wide range of plays, novels and poetry, and discover some of the critical theory that can be used to explore the different meanings of texts, while learning how to place texts within the historical and cultural contexts they were written.

You will be studying a highly regarded subject, favoured by many of the leading universities. It is also a good subject to study alongside other A-Level subjects including History, Classical Civilisation, and Sociology.

During the course you will learn about:

  • The construction of meaning
  • The importance of form, structure and language
  • The importance of point of view, themes and ideas
  • Works from different time periods and genres
  • Close-reading techniques
  • Constructing a written argument
  • Critical approaches to literary texts

You will be assessed through regular feedback during the course, and be required to complete written papers worth 80% of your overall mark, and a number of coursework based projects worth 20%.

What could I progress on to?

Completion of this course may facilitate access onto degree level study in creative writing, journalism, or English.

There are a number of career opportunities available for you to follow such as becoming a writer, going into Publishing, becoming a Journalist, a literary agent, an English teacher or a Copywriter in Marketing or Advertising.

There may be some additional costs during the course for trips and visits to further your learning. All students are required to provide themselves with a dedicated folder for this subject.
