Art & Design Level 3 (UAL)

What entry requirements do I need?

You will need a minimum of: 5 GCSEs grade A*/9 - C/4 including English and maths, or a relevant Level 2 qualification. A portfolio of artwork is also required.

What will I learn?

In the first year you will be able develop your technical ability in craft making, experimenting with materials and techniques such as clay, glass, metal, plastic and textiles. You will develop your analytical skills by undertaking extensive research to give reasoning to your work. During the rest of the first year and into the second year you will continue to explore disciplines including graphic design, illustration and drawing and animation. Furthering your skills and learning in English and Maths is also a mandatory part of this course.

You will explore a range of specialist fields including:

  • Animation
  • Craft (ceramics, glass, metal, plastics, textiles, mould-making)
  • Fine art
  • Graphic design
  • Illustration and drawing
  • Research and Development
  • English and Maths.

By the end of the course you will have developed a range of skills in art and design that will equip you for progression to higher levels of study, at foundation degree or full degree level.

During this two-year course you will further develop your artistic skills and be able to test and challenge art and design ideas and concepts. The course is taught by our experienced professional tutors in our professional studios and workshops.

Your assessment will consist of 9 projects in the first year and 6 projects in the second year. These projects will consist of practical work, coursework and research projects. You overall grade will be determined by your achievements in the final projects at the end of each year.

What could I progress on to?

Once you have completed this course you will have achieved the equivalent of 3 pass grades at A-Level which will enable you to progress to onto BA (Hons) degree courses in Fine Art, Designer Maker, Animation, Graphic Design, Illustration or Photography, all of which are available to study at the University Centre Hastings.

There are a number of career opportunities available to you in the art and design industry such as: a graphic designer, web designer, photographer, illustrator, jewellery designer, set designer, interior designer or fine artist.

You may be required to purchase your own materials such as sketchbooks, pens, paints, brushes, and memory sticks, which cost approximately £6.00 per week. As a SCCH student you will be able to get 10% off in our Plaza Art Shop. You may also have the opportunity to attend a number of trips and visits which may incur additional costs.

Sometimes it can be difficult to decide the right level at which to study. The guide below will help you work which level is best for you.

Entry Level

These courses are for students who want to start progressing up the qualifications levels or have no previous qualifications.

Vocational Level 1

You must have a mixture of grades E to G at GCSE to study at this level.

Vocational Level 2

You must have two grade D's and two grade E's at GCSE or a relevant level 1 qualification to study at this level.

Vocational Level 3

These courses are equivalent to A levels, you must have at least four GCSE's at grade C or above or a relevant level 2 qualification.

A Levels

A levels are level 3 courses, you must have or expect 5 A-C grades at GCSE level including Maths and English.
Foundation Degree and Degree Our university courses typically require a relevant level 3 qualification or 120 UCAS points.
