What entry requirements do I need?

You will need a minimum of: 2 GCSEs grade E/2 - G/1 including English and maths. A good school report, attendance record and attitude towards work, plus attendance at the 'Get to Know' day.

What will I learn?

During this one-year course you will develop a range of skills and knowledge across the construction industry, helping you to specialise in a one particular area. Learning will take place in our purpose built workshops, where you will try your hand at a number of carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying and painting tasks. You will become familiar with a saw, learn how to mix cement, bend copper piping, and paint walls. English and maths is also an essential part of this course.

You will develop your skills and knowledge in the following areas:

  • Carpentry
  • Painting and decorating
  • Plumbing
  • Bricklaying
  • Health and safety

During this course you will gain a thorough introduction into Bricklaying, Plumbing, Carpentry and Painting and Decorating, allowing you to choose a pathway that best suits your skills and ambition.

Your assessment will consist of 80% practical tasks with 20% coursework and written work supporting practical activities.

What could I progress on to?

On completion of the course you will have developed a range of skills that will allow you to seamlessly progress onto a Level 1 course in one of the four areas on construction, in bricklaying, site carpentry or painting and decorating or maintenance operations.

With some additional training you may then decide to focus your career in one of the four construction areas to become a bricklayer, plumber, carpenter or painter and decorator.

A range of specified PPE and other items, costing approximately £40, will be required for this course.

In addition you will also be required to provide safety boots, overalls and navy/black polo shirt. There are also a number of opportunities throughout the year for various construction related trips which may also incur a cost.

Sometimes it can be difficult to decide the right level at which to study. The guide below will help you work which level is best for you.

Entry Level

These courses are for students who want to start progressing up the qualifications levels or have no previous qualifications.

Vocational Level 1

You must have a mixture of grades E to G at GCSE to study at this level.

Vocational Level 2

You must have two grade D's and two grade E's at GCSE or a relevant level 1 qualification to study at this level.

Vocational Level 3

These courses are equivalent to A levels, you must have at least four GCSE's at grade C or above or a relevant level 2 qualification.

A Levels

A levels are level 3 courses, you must have or expect 5 A-C grades at GCSE level including Maths and English.
Foundation Degree and Degree Our university courses typically require a relevant level 3 qualification or 120 UCAS points.
