GCSE English Language

What will I learn?

Gaining a grade C in GCSE English language is a stepping stone into many types of education and employment.

You should take this course if you intend to progress to a Level 3 program, apply for a university course or this qualification may be required by specific employers.

GCSE English is a key qualification that acts as a gateway to furthering your education and career. You will be expected to engage with a variety of texts that will develop your ability to communicate and understand ideas.

You will be tested via coursework, controlled assessments and a final exam. You’ll cover literature to help develop reading skills, analyse texts and improve writing skills.

You will study our combined English Language and Literature GCSE, which includes practical development of your spelling, punctuation and grammar skills, alongside with the analysis of “Of Mice & Men”.

You will be assessed on your coursework and in a final exam. You will submit four Controlled Assessments throughout the year, which are aggregated with the result of your exam to produce your final grade.

40% coursework and 60% written exams.

What could I progress on to?

Achieving a grade C in English can help you achieve your personal or career goals, including further study at Level 3, university, employment or promotion.

Along with Mathematics, a good grade in English Language is an absolute requirement for any university course or career.

Sometimes it can be difficult to decide the right level at which to study. The guide below will help you work which level is best for you.

Entry Level

These courses are for students who want to start progressing up the qualifications levels or have no previous qualifications.

Vocational Level 1

You must have a mixture of grades E to G at GCSE to study at this level.

Vocational Level 2

You must have two grade D's and two grade E's at GCSE or a relevant level 1 qualification to study at this level.

Vocational Level 3

These courses are equivalent to A levels, you must have at least four GCSE's at grade C or above or a relevant level 2 qualification.

A Levels

A levels are level 3 courses, you must have or expect 5 A-C grades at GCSE level including Maths and English.
Foundation Degree and Degree Our university courses typically require a relevant level 3 qualification or 120 UCAS points.
