What entry requirements do I need?

You will need a minimum of: 4 GCSE's A*- D including English and maths. Equivalent Qualifications may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

What will I learn?

The UK hair and beauty industry employs more than a million people and is continuing to grow. If you are interested in starting a career in the industry then this course will help you develop the basic skills that you need. With more than 50,000 hair and beauty businesses in the UK, there are excellent opportunities for employment or self-employment wherever you live.

During the course you will study a range of topics including:

  • Health and safety in the salon
  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Provide basic manicure
  • Skin care
  • Themed face painting
  • Basic make-up
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • Nail art application
  • Presenting a professional image in the salon
  • Shampooing & conditioning
  • Presenting a professional image
  • Styling womenÂ’s hair
  • Shampoo & blow dry
  • Plait and twisting hair
  • Colour hair using temporary colour

You will be able to gain a great head start in Hairdressing and Beauty during this one year course.

You will develop teamwork and self-management skills and will be able to put your learning into practice in our professional salon. You will learn from our professional tutors and be guided while giving treatments to paying customers. You will also develop your functional skills in English and maths, which will enable you to progress to Level 2 courses.

Assessment will be a mix of practical, coursework and exams. You will be continually assessed, gathering practical and oral evidence and working on projects and tasks that lead to end-of-unit exams.

What could I progress on to?

This course could lead onto the College's exciting Level 2 Hairdressing or Level 2 Beauty Therapy programme.

Sometimes it can be difficult to decide the right level at which to study. The guide below will help you work which level is best for you.

Entry Level

These courses are for students who want to start progressing up the qualifications levels or have no previous qualifications.

Vocational Level 1

You must have a mixture of grades E to G at GCSE to study at this level.

Vocational Level 2

You must have two grade D's and two grade E's at GCSE or a relevant level 1 qualification to study at this level.

Vocational Level 3

These courses are equivalent to A levels, you must have at least four GCSE's at grade C or above or a relevant level 2 qualification.

A Levels

A levels are level 3 courses, you must have or expect 5 A-C grades at GCSE level including Maths and English.
Foundation Degree and Degree Our university courses typically require a relevant level 3 qualification or 120 UCAS points.
