Hair & Beauty Studies Level 1

What entry requirements do I need?

You will need a minimum of: 2 GCSEs grade E/2 - G/1 including English and maths.

What will I learn?

Over the course of the year you will develop all the basic skills you need to get you ready for a career in one of these exciting industries. You will be able to learn about health and safety in the beauty and hairdressing salon and develop teamwork and self-management skills. Our experienced and professional tutors will pass on their knowledge to teach a range of practical skills including how to perform a manicure, nail art application and basic make-up, along with shampoo, condition, blow-dry and style women’s hair. You will be able to understand the importance of and how to care for the client’s skin, as well as learning how to present yourself professionally as you preform treatments of paying clients in our commercial salons at the college.

You will study a range of topics including:

  • Health and Safety
  • An Introduction to the Hair and Beauty sector
  • Manicure
  • Skin care
  • Themed face painting
  • Basic make-up
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • Nail art application
  • Presenting a professional image in the salon
  • Shampooing & conditioning

This course will give you a great head start in Hairdressing and Beauty, and give you a real flavour of what working in the industry is like.

During this one-year course you will gain a thorough understanding of the hairdressing and beauty industries.

Your assessments will focus around practical tasks and treatments carried out in the salon, as well as coursework assignments and exams.

What could I progress on to?

After completing the course you will have experience in hair and beauty and will be able to choose a path in either of the College's exciting Level 2 Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy programmes.

The UK hair and beauty industry employs more than a million people and is continuing to grow. With more than 50,000 hair and beauty businesses in the UK, there are excellent opportunities for employment or self-employment in roles such as a Beauty therapist, Hairdresser, Make-up artist, Nail technician or Salon Receptionist.

Sometimes it can be difficult to decide the right level at which to study. The guide below will help you work which level is best for you.

Entry Level

These courses are for students who want to start progressing up the qualifications levels or have no previous qualifications.

Vocational Level 1

You must have a mixture of grades E to G at GCSE to study at this level.

Vocational Level 2

You must have two grade D's and two grade E's at GCSE or a relevant level 1 qualification to study at this level.

Vocational Level 3

These courses are equivalent to A levels, you must have at least four GCSE's at grade C or above or a relevant level 2 qualification.

A Levels

A levels are level 3 courses, you must have or expect 5 A-C grades at GCSE level including Maths and English.
Foundation Degree and Degree Our university courses typically require a relevant level 3 qualification or 120 UCAS points.
