Hair & Make-up Artistry Level 2 (VTCT)

What entry requirements do I need?

You will need a minimum of: 4 GCSEs grade A*/9 - D/3 including English and maths.

What will I learn?

Over the duration of the course you will learn how to apply make-up, learn about make-up preparation, continuity planning for make-up services, health, safety, and hygiene. You will also learn techniques so that you can prepare models for fashion shoots and magazine editorial, learn how to create a total look for competition work, and practise face and body art painting. The course will also give you an understanding of anatomy and physiology and develop customer service skills.

You will study topics that include:

  • Health safety and hygiene
  • Make-up applications
  • Hair preparation services
  • Continuity planning for make-up services
  • Dress and finish hair services
  • Continuity hair services
  • Anatomy and physiology for make-up artists
  • Total look for competition work
  • Face and body art painting
  • Fashion and editorial make-up

During this one-year course you will be able to learn about the art of make-up, everything from the techniques used in applying make-up to environmental sustainability.

You will be assessed throughout the year by ongoing observations. You will also have two exams and a graded synoptic assessment which will be held at the college but set up by an external examining body.

What could I progress on to?

Once you have successfully completed this course you will be ready to develop your knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 3 in Theatrical or Media Make-up.

You will also be eligible to become a member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT).

You may also be ready to start your career in the industry in a variety of roles including, Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios, beauty salons, or on a self-employed basis.

Full kit and uniform will cost £400 and there will be an additional cost of £30 for industry related trips.

Sometimes it can be difficult to decide the right level at which to study. The guide below will help you work which level is best for you.

Entry Level

These courses are for students who want to start progressing up the qualifications levels or have no previous qualifications.

Vocational Level 1

You must have a mixture of grades E to G at GCSE to study at this level.

Vocational Level 2

You must have two grade D's and two grade E's at GCSE or a relevant level 1 qualification to study at this level.

Vocational Level 3

These courses are equivalent to A levels, you must have at least four GCSE's at grade C or above or a relevant level 2 qualification.

A Levels

A levels are level 3 courses, you must have or expect 5 A-C grades at GCSE level including Maths and English.
Foundation Degree and Degree Our university courses typically require a relevant level 3 qualification or 120 UCAS points.
