Intermediate Course in Public Services

What entry requirements do I need?

You will need a minimum of: 4 GCSE's A*- D including English and maths. Equivalent Qualifications may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

What will I learn?

This one-yearcourse will give you the knowledge, teamwork and health and fitness skills you need to work in the public services. It provides a great insight into working in the sector to help you make an informed choice about your career.

During this one-year course you will gain an in-depth knowledge about the role that each of the uniformed public services and emergency services play in helping supporting and protecting us. You will develop the teamwork, behavioural and health and fitness skills you need to part of the public services, and understand crime and how it affects society. Learning will take place in the classroom, the college’s Station Plaza Fitness gym, nearby Horntye Park Sports Complex and Hastings Country Park. Modules during the course will consist of: Role and work of the public services Working skills in the public service sector Health, fitness and lifestyle for the public services Citizenship, society and the public services Crime and its effects of society and individuals Sport and Recreation in the Public Services Land navigation by map and compass Multi-day expedition experienceYou will begin the year with an induction camp whereby you will meet all students within the department and start developing the skills required to be a successful UPS student.There will also be opportunities to represent the college in sports teams and a number of events, where you will represent the college whilst in the public eye.

You will be assessed through a range of practical and coursework assignments.

What could I progress on to?

On completion of the course you may choose to study at Level 3, which will prepare you for recruitment to the services.With additional training you will be able to start your career as a Police Officer, join the Army, Navy or RAF, or become a Firefighter.

Entry Level

These courses are for students who want to start progressing up the qualifications levels or have no previous qualifications.

Vocational Level 1

You must have a mixture of grades E to G at GCSE to study at this level.

Vocational Level 2

You must have two grade D's and two grade E's at GCSE or a relevant level 1 qualification to study at this level.

Vocational Level 3

These courses are equivalent to A levels, you must have at least four GCSE's at grade C or above or a relevant level 2 qualification.

A Levels

A levels are level 3 courses, you must have or expect 5 A-C grades at GCSE level including Maths and English.
Foundation Degree and Degree Our university courses typically require a relevant level 3 qualification or 120 UCAS points.
