A-Level English Language

What is the most powerful thing you have at your disposal? Your language.

If you want to understand how language is used and how it shapes the world around us, this is the subject for you.

The course examines key constituents of the English language and how they contribute to meaning.

How will I be assessed?

Regular feedback throughout the course, plus a coursework folder comprising two pieces of creative writing with commentaries (40%) and a final examination (60%).

What will I learn?

Through textual analysis and your own creative responses, you will consider:

  • The purposes of writing
  • How to create texts for specific audiences
  • Contextual factors
  • Stylistic features

You will also have the opportunity to:

  • Explore the spoken language
  • Explore the impact of new technology
  • Consider how gender and culture influence our verbal interaction
  • Consider how the English language is constantly in flux – with words and phrases slipping in and out of usage all the time
