Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes which lead to nationally recognised qualifications. Apprenticeships include a mixture of on-the-job and off- the-job training so you can learn new skills, prove your worth to your employer, and increase your employment and promotion prospects.
As an apprentice, you earn a wage while you are training, and you get to work alongside experienced staff members to gain skills that are specific to your job. You can start an Apprenticeship straight from school at 16, or after gaining further qualifications or employment experience, so read on to find out more about how you can ‘earn while you learn’.
What does it involve?
Apprenticeships are available in lots of different job roles and industries and at various different levels, depending on your age and experience.
You will be employed for at least 30 hours per week and Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete. They give you the chance to build up your practical skills and technical knowledge, to gain experience in the workplace, and to complete a mixture of on- the-job and off-the-job training. Most of your practical skills will be developed with your employer in the workplace, while the technical side will be taught either at Sussex Coast College Hastings or in the workplace.
If you are under 19 when you start your Apprenticeship, neither you nor your employer is expected to contribute financially to any part of the training. If you are over 19, your employer will be asked to make a contribution. Your employer will pay your wages while you are on the Apprenticeship programme.
What qualifications will I get?
You will work towards a variety of qualifications known as an Apprenticeship Framework, and these vary depending on your job role and industry sector. Qualifications included are an NVQ or Diploma, a Technical Certificate and Functional Skills, and you will also need to complete Employee Rights and Responsibilities and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills. Your time is divided between working with your employer and undertaking training with the College. For example, some apprentices spend four days a week with their employer and one day a week at Sussex Coast College Hastings, while others undertake all their training in the workplace, with the College coming to the employer for their part of the programme.
On completion of all the parts of the framework you will be awarded an Apprenticeship Framework Certificate. You may wish to progress to the next level when you have finished, and study an Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3. This will take between 18 and 36 months depending on the vocational area.

If you are not employed
If you have not yet found an employer we will not be able to sign you up until you start suitable employment. Sussex Coast College Hastings will do everything we can to help you find suitable employment for your Apprenticeship, but it is also up to you to try and find a suitable position. Earn while you learn
All apprentices must receive the appropriate national minimum wage -£2.73 for any learner of any age in their first year of their appreniticeship.
Once the first year of apprenticeship is completed the minimum wage band stated below then applies:
Year 15 - 16
|21 and over||18 to 20||Under 18|
A real job
All apprentices should work for at least 30 hours a week, apart from in exceptional circumstances. Over 150,000 employers are offering Apprenticeships in more than 200,000 locations. Apprenticeships are available at Intermediate, Advanced and Higher (degree) level, covering more than 170 industries and 1500 job roles, from advertising to youth work via environmental engineering and nuclear decommissioning.
A real qualification
Quality is key to Apprenticeships. All Apprenticeships must be at least 12 months long and lead to a national qualification that is respected by employers around the world.
A real future
After finishing, the majority of apprentices (85%) will stay in employment, with two- thirds (64%) staying with the same employer. A third (32%) of all former apprentices had received a promotion within 12 months of finishing, and of those in work, three quarters (75%) reported taking on more responsibility in their job. Employers think that qualified apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications.
