We are committed to providing our employees with opportunities for personal and professional development throughout their careers with us. We offer a range of support and benefits so that they can increase their competencies and capabilities to effectively contribute towards the achievement of the College’s aims.

We have a number of provisions in place to help employees support their own career development:

  • Leadership and management development programme
  • Induction and mentoring ensuring newly appointed are adequately prepared for and supported in their roles
  • Initial teacher training for all unqualified teaching staff
  • In-house training and development in-line with College strategic priorities
  • Where relevant to the needs of the business, contribution toward the costs of qualifications

In addition, there are days throughout the academic year that are dedicated to the provision of staff development activities for all staff.

There are numerous benefits for those who want to work with us, including:

Subsidised gym membership and hair and beauty treatments

Employees can gain access to our onsite gym at our Station Plaza campus, at subsidised rate. Likewise, there are discounted hair and beauty treatments available to staff, performed by our tutors and qualified students.

Learn and develop

Your learning and development is important to us and we recognise that it is the quality and commitment of our employees that will enable us to fully achieve our aims.

We provide a wide range of development opportunities for both teaching and support staff. This includes a range of professional teaching qualifications, a leadership and management development programme, IT training, health and safety training, and safeguarding training. You will have a yearly appraisal where your personal development plan and goals will be agreed for the following year. There is also opportunity for internal progressions with our range of job opportunities and different career paths.

In addition, the College is committed to delivering its Skills Pledge; a voluntary pledge to support all employees in developing their basic skills, including literacy and numeracy and work towards relevant, valuable qualifications to at least level 2 (equivalent to 5 good GCSEs).

Help settling in

It is important to us that you settle in to your new role and feel welcome at the college. You will receive a comprehensive induction in addition to a supported probationary period, which includes regular reviews and feedback sessions with your line manager. During this period you will have reasonable time to demonstrate your abilities and suitability for the post.

Work in a supportive environment

We provide an occupational health service via Health Assured and a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to include counselling.

In addition, we have a dedicated and professional HR department who are available to provide support and guidance in relation to health concerns or work related issues should you experience any during your time at the College.

Work Flexibly

We have a range of flexible working initiatives to help you balance your work and home-life commitments. These include a flexi-time scheme (applicable to some, but not all areas of the college), job sharing arrangements and a flexible working policy to enable to request a flexible working pattern.

Work in an environment committed to ensuring equality

We recognise and value the diversity of our workforce and the local community, opposing all forms of discrimination on the grounds of race or ethnic origin, gender, religion or belief, sexual orientation, disability or age.

We want to ensure that all attributes, talents and skills available reflect our staff and learners and the communities they live in. We stand by the principle to fill jobs roles by the best able candidate to do them. We also take every possible step to ensure that all of our employees are treated fairly, given equal opportunities and are supported appropriately. We ensure that all employment decisions including those on recruitment and selection, promotion, training and career development are based solely on job related objective criteria, and this is partly recognised through our ‘two ticks’ disability employer status.

Pension schemes

You will automatically join either the Local Government Pension Scheme or the Teachers’ Pension Scheme. (www.lgps.org.uk – Support staff or www.teacherspensions.co.uk – Teaching staff)

Both schemes (defined benefits scheme) provide benefits including:

  • The benefits you get when you retire are based on the length of your membership in the scheme and your salary
  • The schemes provide you with a secure future income, independent of share prices and stock market fluctuations
  • The schemes are provided by SCCH who meet the balance of the cost of providing your benefits
  • You have the option to exchange part of your pension for some tax-free cash on your retirement
  • Opportunity to purchase extra contributions
  • Opportunity to transfer-in from other schemes
  • Flexible retirement options

Generous annual leave scheme

The College offers a generous annual leave scheme, providing teaching staff with 43 days (plus 8 bank holidays) annual leave and support staff with a minimum of 20 days (plus 8 bank holidays) annual leave. The amount of annual leave you are entitled to varies depending on your role and length of service.
